For over thirty years Elisabeth “Betsy” DeVos has been dedicated to educational reform and to becoming active in politics. She first found her passion for politics during her time at Calvin College. She immediately became active in campus politics and since then has only become more active until she blazed a career that would eventually lead her to becoming the United States Secretary of Education. Prior to that she has led many campaigns and political action committees and even held the position of the Michigan Republican Party’s Chairman for six years. She and her husband founded the Windquest Group, a company that invest in a variety of things like technology and clean energy.
Her philosophy in everything she does has been to find creative solutions to social problems, especially in the educational sector. While she clearly does this through her political role as Secretary of Education, she also pursues bringing about change through her philanthropic work and nonprofit roles.
She and her husband founded the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation which she chaired. The Foundation was created to better manage her family’s robust giving, which totaled over $11 million dollars last year. The Foundation contributes to organizations that are in line with the couple’s political passions. The company donates to the Success Academy Charter Schools, an organization promoting New York Charter Schools. Betsy DeVos also donated to the Alliance for School Choice, another program she is passionate about.
The couple also donated to individual schools, including the Potter’s House School. This is a Christian School in Grand Rapids Michigan that serves many low income families. As part of its offerings, it often provides scholarships to low income families who want to give their children a Christian education. When Betsy and Dick DeVos first visited the school, they were touched by the level of education the Potter’s House was giving children in an inner city area and wanted to do their part to help. They now provide multiple annual scholarships to children from low income families.
Betsy DeVos also supports many conservative organizations. She works with the American Enterprise Institute and donated $750,000 to the think tank for the organization.
She also served in many leadership positions including the board of the Kennedy Center’s DeVos Institute for the Arts Management, Kids Hope USA and the prestigious Foundation for Excellence in Education. She is passionate about kids having multiple choices in schools and to support that passion from a non-profit position she served as the chair of both the Alliance for School Choice and the American Federation for Children.
She is striving to make a difference through her politics as well as through the charitable giving that comes from The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation.
